In 1851 John was 5 years old and living at Udimore, Sussex with his father Edward Whiteman (46 of Udimore), sister Ann Whiteman (18 of Udimore), brother Spencer Whiteman (10 of Udimore), sister Maria Whiteman (8 of Udimore). Edward was widowed and working as an agricultural labourer.[1]
In 1861 John was 16 years old and working as an apprentice blacksmith for William Collins at Udimore, Sussex.[2]

Possible immigration to the United States in the 1880 census, matches name, birth year.[3] although that may be a John Whiteman born 5 January 1845 from Brighton, Sussex.[4]
