James was the son of Thomas Whiteside[2] (born about 1822, died 1902 in Ballytresna, Drummaul, Co. Antrim) and Mary Whiteside (born about 1835, died 15 November 1892 aged 57 in Ballytresna, Drummaul, Co. Antrim).
James Whiteside married Emma Beckett of Lenagh in 1887 at the Drummaul Parish Church[2].
In the 1901 census James Whiteside was 38, living in Ballytresna, Co. Antrim as a farmer. Living with him were his wife, Emma (Beckett) Whiteside (33) and their four sons Thomas (11), Samuel (7), William (3) and James (1) and two daughters Margaret (9) and Mary (5). Also James's father Thomas Whiteside age 80[3].
In the 1911 census James Whiteside was 49, a farmer living in Ballytresna, Co. Antrim. Living with him were his wife Emma (Beckett) Whiteside (43) and their six sons Thomas (21), Samuel (17), William (13), James (11), Walter (6) and John (2) and three daughters Mary (15), Susan (8) and Lizzie (4)[1]. Their daughter Margaret, a dress maker, had died on 26th November 1910 age 18[4].
James Whiteside died in 1922 at the family farm in Ballytresna, Drummaul, Co. Antrim[5]. His estate was administered by his son James.
