Biography

Birth

George said that he was born in March of 1889, but did not know the exact day. (Draft Card) He was baptized on 6 June 1900, when 11 years of age. (Cong. Recs.) He was born in Trempeauleau, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. (Soc. Sec.) His father was White Snake, and his mother had the surname Thunder. (Soc. Sec.)

Name

His Hocąk name was, ironically, Wak-con-sep-kaw, which is for Wakąsēpka, "Black Snake", from waką́, "snake, serpent"; sēp, "black, dark"; and -ka, a definite article suffix used in personal names. The wakąsép is the blue racer snake. This is a Snake Clan name.

Appearance

He is described in his draft card as being slender, of medium hight, with dark eyes and black hair.

Marriage

Around 1915 he married Lillian Smith (b. 28 Dec. 1897), the daughter of Lawrence Charles Smith and Mary Hardin. (1918 census) She died sometime between 1930 and 1933. (censuses)

By 1933, he had married Josie Payer. (1933 census)

By 1937, he had married Grace (Sampson) Bigbear. (1937 census)

Military Record

During WWI, he served in the Nebraska Army National Guard, where he achieved the rank of Corporal. (Find a Grave)

Death

He passed away in January 1942, and is buried at the Winnebago Cemetery, Winnebago, Thurston County, Nebraska. (Find a Grave)
