Matthew Whitfield was born in 1859 ^[1] in Sankey Bridges, Lancashire, England, the son of Henry Whitfield and Ellen Webb.

In 1861 Matthew (aged about 2) was with his parents and 4 siblings on the vessel 'Susan', a flatboat moored in Liverpool, Lancashire. His father was the master. ^[2]

When Matthew was about 23 he married Elizabeth Ann Birchall on 20 August 1882 in Warrington, Lancashire. ^[3]

In 1891 Matthew was visiting his brother and his family together with his wife and 2 children in Dakin's Yard, Warrington. Matthew was a waterman. ^[4]

In 1901 Matthew (aged about 42) was widowed living in Bootle, Lancashire with 4 children. He was a grain storage machine minder. ^[5]

Mathew died at the age of 55 in 1914. His death was registered in West Derby, Lancashire. ^[6]
