Biography

Mary was born June 1830 in Onondaga County, New York.[1][2] She was the daughter of Jared Whiton and Susan Cornish. She did not marry or have children, and passed away in 1905.

There is no existing birth, marriage, or death certificate that can identify her parents and siblings. There are a number of census and legal sources that, in combination, lead to the conclusion regarding her parents and siblings.

In the 1850 census in the town of Elbridge[3], Susan Whiting (misspelled/indexed as Whitney) was living with Mary, Frances, and Jane. It is likely that Susan is the mother, with daughters Mary, Frances, and Jane.

Susan Whitney F 52 Connecticut
Mary Whitney F 20 New York
Frances Whitney F 18 New York
Jane Whitney F 16 New York

Reviewing the image, the family next door[4] includes (likely brothers) Heman Whiting and (Jared) Wilson Whiting.

Herman Whiting M 27 New York
Rachel F 23 New York
Wilson Whiting M 23 New York

Another likely collection of mother and siblings is found in the 23 Dec 1854 Syracuse Standard notice for a Referee’s Sale of Real Estate[5] stating that a partition of land could not be agreed upon. This was in regards to 99 acres on lot 59 in the town of Elbridge. Named individuals were:

Heman C. Whiting, Jared W. Whiting, Frances L. Whiting, and Susan Whiting against Archimedes Stephenson, and Susan E. Stephenson his wife, Mary H. Whiting and Jane Whiting.

On 14 February 1855 as the resolution of the Referee's land sale, Heman C Whiting and Jared W Whiting purchased at auction 99 1/2 acres in lot 59 in Elbridge for $7305.[6]

Susan Cornish Whiting died in March 1855[7] and is buried in the Jordan Village Cemetery. Jared Whiting died in 1845 and is also buried in the Jordan Village Cemetery.[8]

In the 22 Jun 1855 census in the town of Elbridge, H. C. Whiting and J. W. Whiting were living next door to each other. Susan Elvira, her husband Archimedes and their children are found with Mary Whiting, Frances Whiting, and Jane Whiting[1] as borders. It makes sense that Susan Cornish Whiting had just died, and her daughters moved in with their married elder sister. Mary was a teacher.

Hello Kay, & thanks for the message, which caused me to go back and review my records and add the middle name ‘Ann’ “to the Whiting-2806 page. She was born in Greenbush, NY, which is in the Albany suburban area, but her parents were documented per Breed Family Association records as Jonas Whiting and Harriet Breed. There were indeed many Mary Whitings out there.
