Biography

  • Fact: Burial (29 September 1862) Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States
  • Fact: Residence (29 Sep 1862) Concord, MA
  • Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch From “Memoirs of Members of the Social Circle in Concord: 2nd ser., from 1795 to 1840”

“Mr. [William] Whiting [William Whiting, Sr.] of Sterling, earned his living in that little inland town by following the handicraft of a saddler; and his son William [William Whiting, Jr.] came to that home of privation, poverty, and hardship with no other equipment for the battle of life than a vigorous physical constitution, and such instincts, qualities, and ambitions as he had inherited from more remote ancestors. Among such surroundings his infancy was passed, and he did not begin to go to school until his father removed to Westminster in 1795.

“….When [William, Jr.] was eight years old he was sent by his father to live with a farmer in Westminster named Woodward, who lived about half a mile from his father’s house, and with whom he lived for three years, and from this early age seems to have earned his own living, and to have been the architect of his own fortunes….[he was] never again to return to [his parents’] care at home.”

“Of his relations to his parents after he left home he gives this account:--‘I think it was in the spring of 1811 that my father moved from Westminster to Lancaster. He lived about twenty years from that time, and I have the heartfelt satisfaction of knowing that I paid most, if not quite all, his house rent during that period, and for a number of years previous to his death, paid all the expenses of supporting my parents until the death of my father in 1832. After his decease I paid all the funeral expenses. My mother went to live with my brother Prentice at Uxbridge. She died there in 1848.’”
