Jane Whiting was born on 14 March 1838 in Alton, Hampshire, England her father, James, was 33, and her mother, Ann, was 34. She married William Lockyer on 26 October 1855. They had 12 children in 24 years. She died on 20 August 1909 in Nelson at the age of 71, and was buried in Nelson, New Zealand.
