Biography

Martha A Whitley was enumerated at Lythonia Post Office, Diamonds District, DeKalb County, Georgia for the August 8, United States Census, 1860. She was noted as born 1849 in Georgia and having attended school within the last year as seen in the image of the original census. Also included in the household are male Needom Whitley, female Mary W Whitley, male Newton J Whitley, female Susan A Whitley, male John H Whitley, male Thos J Whitley, male Wm F Whitley and female Betsey Ann Whitley.[1]

Martha A Powell was enumerated as wife at Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia for the June 15, United States Census, 1880. She was noted as keeping house, born 1850 in Georgia and married as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are self John L Powell, daughter Sarah O Powell, daughter Mary L Powell, son Luther N Powell and daughter Dora A Powell.[2]

Martha Powell was enumerated as wife of the head of household in Districts 536, 1398, Panthersville, Redan, DeKalb, Georgia for the June 19, United States Census, 1900. She was noted as born October 1849 in Georgia and had been married thirty years. She was the mother of nine children of which eight were still living as seen in an image of the original census. Also included in the household are head John Powell, son Wemergen Powell, son John E Powell, son Avery Powell and daughter Mierian Powell.[3]

Martha Powell was enumerated as wife of the head of household at Lithonia and Redan Road, Redan, DeKalb County, Georgia for the January 23, United States Census, 1920. She was noted as born 1851 in Georgia and married as seen in the image of the original census. Also included in the household are head John Powell and son Memergene Powell.[4]

Martha Whitley was listed as the mother of Luther N Powell who died March 7, 1932 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. The father was listed as John Powell.[5]

Martha Ann Whitley Powell is buried at Lithonia City Cemetery in Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia.[6]
