Selina was born about 1853. She passed away about 1935. Her husband's nephew, Cyril Oliver Rhys, commented (c. 1949): "We never particularly liked Aunt Selina, though my mother once referred to her as being "as steady as Old Time".
Selina, before her marriage, aged 26, was working as a housemaid in St. John's Wood. London, a fact that tends to support the oft-repeated slander that the eight children of William 'Oliver', popular artist, were given only rudimentary educations and in consequence gravitated socially downward in their choice of spouses.
Selina's parents, Frederick Whitlock (labourer, and sometime baker) and Mary King, were a fertile couple and based generally around Oxford though one child was born in Liverpool.
