Biography

Disputed

At one time, it was speculated that a John Whitlock, born 1585, in Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, was the immigrant to Connecticut, or perhaps his father, and also the father of Hannah (Whitlock) Baldwin and Rose (Whitlock) Parker. Further research by the Whitlock Family Association has proved this to be a false lead. The association with Cholesbury belongs strictly to the Baldwin Family.[1]

Suggested scenario: John Whitlock, male, b. 1585, Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, England allegedly married Sarah Vile July 10, 1610 at Buckinghamshire, England. They were parents of Hannah Whitlock[2]

The logic here does not fit. John of Connecticut's children were underage in 1659 when he died. John's son, David's children were born about 1680-1695, estimating David's birth at say 1650, but not earlier than 1639. John Jr's children were born in a similar time frame. The possible daughter Sarah was 12 in 1667 making her birth in 1655.

It is illogical that a John and Sarah married in 1610, were having children in 1650.

John, Rose and Hannah Whitlock have no known relationship. Sarah Vile was determined to be speculation.[3]

About 1624 to before 14 Oct 1659

John Whitlock was born about 1624.

John was an early settler of Fairfield, Connecticut.[4]

John Whitlock died before 14 Oct 1659, when an inventory of his estate was made. He died intestate. Children included David, John and daughters. His widow married Henry Whelpley and d. probably about 1661.[5]

Children:

  • David Whitlock m. Mary Sherwood
  • John Whitlock married Sarah Sherwood
  • Daughters - One of these was probably Sarah Whitlock who was mentioned by Winthrop in 1667 lived at Thomas Sanford's in Milford, fatherless and motherless.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Are there any sources showing he was in New England by 1640? I am not seeing any sources for that in his profile, but perhaps I have missed something. He does not have a listing in Anderson's Directory..., and the G2G post does not an immigration date either, but says he was in Salem before he moved to Connecticut.

Thank you

I'm thinking this is probably two different people.

1. John Whitlock m. Sarah Vile perhaps parents of Hannah and Rose. Death dates unknown. (I can't find any confirmation of these dates and/or relationships). A Hannah m. a Baldwin of Cholesbury.

2. John Whitlock m. Unknown. died Fairfield 1659. Parent of David and John (m. Sarah Sherwood)

Questioning the birth information, listed on the profile. Isn't Netherlands, Genealogie just another set of online trees. Likewise Sarah Vile. We don't even know the wifes first name, how can we know the second?

Whitlock-224 and Whitlock-76 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates and places. Need to settle wife: Sarah Vile vs Sarah Unknown
