James was born about 1737, and passed away about 1783.
James Whitlock inherited just two items from his father, James Whitlock,[1] a Bible, and a book titled, The Whole Duty of Man According to the Law of Nature[2], which describes the innate respect and obligation that a son should have for, among others, his parents, his god, etc. This unusual legacy, of little monetary value, leaves us with the impression that the elder man was unhappy with the son's behavior toward his father, and possibly with other aspects of his life.
