Biography

Cheshire (historic flag)
Edward Whitlow was born in Thelwall, Cheshire, England.

Edward was the third child and only son of Edward Whitlow and Sarah Elizabeth Stubbs He was born on the 24th September 1895, just a few weeks after the tragic death of his father. His mother married again when he was about two and more sisters were born to his family.

His birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1895 in the Runcorn district.[1]

In the 1901 census Edward (age 5) was the stepson of Henry Loxton at Railway View, Poulton-with-Fearnhead, Lancashire, England.[2]

In the 1911 census Edward (age 15) was living with the family at Railway View, Padgate, Lancashire and working as a gardener. [3]

Later on Edward joined the post office and worked as a postman. [4]

The First World War broke out in 1914 and on the 22nd November 1915, at the age of 20 he signed up with the South Lancashire Regiment to do his part. He was mobilised on 20th January 1916. He saw action in France but was seriously wounded in a gas attack and sent to a hospital in England in August 1917. He was eventually discharged as disabled on 12th June 1919. The official documentation gave his condition as "an inflammation of the stomach" [4]but according to his family his initial injuries included being left blind for three months.

In November 1920 Edward started working for the General Post Office again in Warrington.[5]

He married Lilian Cash at St Mary's Church Lymm on 21st July, 1921 [6]

Their marriage was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1921 in the Bucklow district.[7]

In the 1939 register Edward (age 43), Postman Driver, was the married head of household at 19 Chapel Lane, Stockton Heath, Cheshire, England.[8]

Edward and Lilian moved into the house in Chapel Lane, Stockton Heath fairly early in their marriage and stayed there for the rest of their lives.

After being a Postman Driver, Edward became head of the stores, retiring from the GPO (General Post Office) at sixty which was the general date for retiring from the Post Office. Shortly before retirement he received the Imperial Service Medal for his long service. He then worked for five years as a chauffeur for Garton's, the Warrington based seed company.

His early work as a gardener developed into a lifelong love of gardening. He had 3 allotments which helped to feed his family as well as providing enough to be able to sell some of his produce and flowers. He was a lifelong member of Stockton Heath Garden Society. He won many prizes at shows and also became a show judge.

Edward was taken ill and died in Warrington General Hospital, Warrington, Cheshire at the age of 82 on the 17th June 1978. His death was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1978 in the WARRINGTON district.[9]

His estate passed probate on 9 August 1978 in Liverpool.[10]

WHITLOW, Edward of Chapel Lane, Stockton Heath, Warrington died 17 June 1978 Probate Liverpool 9 August £9576

Research Notes

  • The Banns were read for Edward's marriage in Christ Church, Padgate, Lancashire on 17th July 1921[11] but the wedding took place in Lymm on 21st July.
  • The transcription for the 1939 register seems to imply the location is Runcorn. However the actual location is Stockton Heath, which came under Runcorn Rural District and it is this district which is referred to on the document rather than the actual name of the village.
