Emma Blanche Whitmer was born in Hand, South Dakota on March 12, 1888 to Morris and Mary Whitmer.
The Whitmer family lived in South Dakota until between 1885 and 1900. It is uncertain if they moved back to Iowa before or after the death of Emma's father, Morris in 1898.
From US Census documents and various other sources, it appears that Emma and Ray made a permanent home in Iowa.
