There was no united country called Germany in 1840. Baden was the Grand Duchy of Baden (Großherzogtum Baden). It continued as a Grand Duchy after Germany was united into the German Empire (Deutsches Reich) in 1871. In 1918 it became the Republic of Baden as part of the Weimar Republic. It merged with the former Kingdom of Württemberg into Baden-Württemberg, a current state of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland), in 1952.
Source: S27 Title: Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947. Note: Death of his son, Emery. Gives Philip's birthplace as Baden (state - FR), Germany. 1900 Census (#S25) says born Alabama, mother born Ohio, father born Germany. So Philip's birthplace is now in question. LATER: 1930 census for daughter Orvilla (Orla) also shows Philip's birthplace as Germany.
Source: S28 Title: Illinois, Cook County Deaths, 1878-1922. Note: Record for death of probable daughter, Nellie V. lends credence to her being their daughter. Gives birth date as 17 Jun 1866, making her old enough to have been out of the house, likely married, at the time of the 1900 census. Also shows Philip's birthplace as Germany; switching to that (Alabama is still possible).
Source: S409 Title: Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1994. Gives his surname as "Wittmer," which was my guess as his actual name at birth. Whitmer is likely an Americanization of the spelling.
