Biography

He was baptised 3/12/1843 in Reigate Surrey. His parents were Thomas and Susanna Whitmore.

In 1851 he was age 7 and living with his family in Reigate Surrey. He had 10 siblings.

In 1863 he was married in St Thomas Church Redhill.

In 1881 he was age 35 and living in Brighton Sussex with his wife and children. His occupation was Bricklayer. His place of birth was Redhill Surrey.

In his obituary it states that he arrived in Western Australia on the Mineroo in 1886 and then moved to Geraldton. I can't find any reference to this vessel online. His wife's obituary states they arrived in Geraldton on 28/7/1888 but it must have been 1886 as he applied for a job with Geraldton Municipal Council in January 1887.

In February 1889 he gave the following evidence in a court case. Joseph Whitmore, sworn, said : I have had 25 years experience as a mason and builder in London and Brighton ; I have taken contracts to build large schools and houses and for general building.

He was a builder/contractor in Geraldton for 30 years.

In 1924 he went to live with his daughter Mrs T. A. Smith in Swan St Cottesloe.

He died age 86. He is buried in Karrakatta Cemetery. Cemetery records have his date of death as 12/4/196. The grantee of the plot was his daughter Ellen Smith.

He left a family of two sons (Bert and William) and three daughters (Mrs A Smith, Mrs G Plummer and Mrs M Scott), 23 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Some of his grandsons were Messrs. Gordon A. and Lawrence Whitmore, Roy and Sydney Smith, and Harry and Richard Lowe. Other grandchildren were Wesley Frank Whitmore, Frank, Doris and Enid Smith, Mrs. A. M'Cormick, Bernard Lowe, and Mesdames F. Smith, G. Whitmore, and R. Smith.

Whitmore-2365 and Whitmore-454 appear to represent the same person because: Other than slight differences in dates, clearly the same person (same spouse, same child).
