Philip was born in 1878 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was the son of Alpa Matilda Nutt and Civil War veteran William Lambert Whitney, Jr. of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.


He passed away in 1960 and is buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier, Vermont.
