Biography

WHELOCK DAVID "Willie" WHITNEY
Wheelock David Whitney, was born on October 24. 1875, and died in February 1945 of a heart attack while trying to dig his car out of a snowdrift in Escanaba, Michigan. He married HELEN D. FINCH on April, 25, 1906, and had two children:
a. Robert Finch Whitney, born Oct. 29, 1907; married about 1937 to Oreta Carr, and had one daughter:
i. Sally (?) Whitney
b. Margaret Elizabeth Whitney, born May 14, 1911; married a Mr. St. Peter
Wheelock David Whitney was baptized David, but he hated the name David. When very young he became very fond of Wheelock Willie, a clerk in the store run by his father's cousin Robert Parker Whitney. This attachment led to his adopting the name Wheelock Willie for himself, and according to his nephew Alton he changed his name legally when he went to live in the States.
Alton described him as a lovable character. "No one could get mad at him, no matter how much he took advantage of their good nature."
