William Witt (Whitt by about 1850) was born about 1787 in North Carolina, the son of Edmund and Ann Witt.
On 31 March 1809 in Stokes County, North Carolina, William married Sally Sizemore[1][2].
In 1810, William was living in Stokes County with one son under 10 but no wife[3]. It's presumed his wife Sally was deceased.
By 1814, William is found on the tax rolls in Russell County, Virginia, with his father and brothers: Edward, John, James, and Anthony.[4]
In 1820, William is in Russell County[5]. In the household are: 2 m 0–9 (1811–1820); 1 m 26–44 (1776–1794); 1 f 16–25 (1795–1804). Apparently William has remarried and had another son with this woman.
In 1830, William is still in Russell County[6]. In the household are: 2 m 10-14 (1816–1820), 1 m 40-49 (1781–1790), 1 f 5-9 (1821–1825), 1 30-39 (1791–1800). Other Witts listed in this census are: Jesse, Daniel, James. Previous page 173, John Witt & 2nd James Witt.
In 1840, William and family are still in Russell County[7]. In the household are: 1 m 0–4 (1836–1840), 1 m 50–59 (1781–1790), 1 f 40–49 (1791–1800).
In the 1850 census William is spelling his name Whitt[8]. He was born in 1787 (63 yo) in North Carolina. His wife is Nancy, born 1797 (53 yo) at an unknown location. Neither William nor Nancy can read or write. There is also a laborer in the household.
On 6 Sept 1860, William Whitt was 70 years old, a farmer with a personal estate valued at $150 (no real estate value). He still could not read or write. No wife is shown, so Nancy may have died. William was still residing in Russell County, Virginia. There appears to be no 1870 census for him, so he may have died in Russell County after Sept 1860 and before 1870.
Censuses indicate William Whitt had 1 son with his first wife Sally, and 2 sons and 1 daughter with a different wife (or wives). The 1840 census also indicates a child under 5, but the lapse in ages may mean it's not their child. The 1867 marriage record of John Whitt (1817-bef.1890) and Ruth Daugherty shows John's parents as Wm. and Mary Whitt, so John is likely William's son. Whether William had a wife between Sally and Nancy is unknown. They are in the same census in 1860 (albeit not on adjacent properties).
