George Pyke Dowling Whittaker was born in Brooklyn, Green County, Wisconsin, USA, on 15 April 1853.[1]
His family then lived in Mill Creek, Washington County, Kansas Territory, USA at the time of the 1860 census.[2]
The family migrated to Australia from New York - parents and three sons (his sister is believed to have died before the journey). They arrived in Melbourne on 15 March 1864 (George was eldest, aged 10) and travelled to South Australia.
George Pyke Dowling Whittaker took up a selection of land in what is now the Dowlingville Area. He took section 151, Hundred of Cunningham in August 1882, transferred from previous selector Alfred Rutter, Jun.[3] and Section 138 in October 1883, transferred from previous selector Alfred Rutter.[4] His brothers had nearby selections.
He married Louisa Crowell at her mother's residence on 25 May 1880.[5]
George died on 7 March 1901 at Adelaide Hospital, aged 48 years,[7] and was buried at Price.[8]

Previous selectors could have been Alfred Rutter (1856-1919) (jun) who married in Maitland in 1876 and either himself (without the Jun) or his father Alfred Rutter (abt.1827-1894) who remarried at Moonta in 1868 and died at Moonta in 1894. Those profiles do not currently have sufficient detail to confirm.
