Biography

Amos was born in 1761. He is the son of Richard Whittaker and Patience Bowen. Amos served in the Revolutionary War as a private for 3 months, substituting for his brother, Richard, in the Company of Capt. Elisha Franklin under Col. Daggett of the Massachusetts State Militia. He also served 1 1/2 months as a private in the Company of Capt. Israel Hicks under Col. Whitney, later serving one month in Capt. Nathaniel Ide's Company (Col. unknown). Later, in 1780, he served one month further. He later moved to Johnston, Providence County, Rhode Island and married. His widow, Esther, in 1853, applied to receive his pension in Rhode Island. His pension file contains her affidavit and a copy of their family Bible records showing their marriage and the birth of their daughter, as well as Esther's birth and previous marriage to Nathan Relph with the births of their children.[1]
