William R. Whittemore was born in 1856 in Massachusetts, United States, son of George Washington Whittemore (1812–1870) and Cynthia Higgins Richardson (~1818–1904).

William and Isabella Stewart were married.

Isabella was born on January 6, 1854 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. She was the daughter of Alonzo Stewart and Isabella (Ireland) Steward.

Their children were:

1. Harris Stewart Whittemore (1881–1966)
2. William Stewart Whittemore (1882–1962)
3. Robert Dunster Whittemore (1891–1933)
4. Roland De Carteret Whittemore (1892–1892)

William died on August 1, 1935 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts, aged 78.

He was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
