Biography

When James C Whitten Jr was born on 15 December 1819, in Virginia, United States, his father, James Witten, was 37 and his mother, Rebecca Rachael Peery, was 39. He married Mary Frances Mays on 1 June 1849, in Botetourt, Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in Botetourt, Virginia, United States in 1860 and Union District, Lincoln, West Virginia, United States for about 30 years. He registered for military service in 1861. He died on 19 December 1918, in West Virginia, United States, at the age of 99, and was buried in Linville Cemetery, Griffithsville, Lincoln, West Virginia, United States.

The Military Service he involved with was the Confederate Civil war. There is only 1 James C. Whitten in the Civil War for the confederates in Virginia, he was 42 at the time and just young enough to be force conscripted as the cut off is 45.

James C Whitten was apart of the 28th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Company F/(E 3rd) Botetourt Spring Rifles: CAPT. F G ROCKE[1]
The company was accepted in state service at Botetourt Springs, Roanoke County, Virginia, on 20 May, 1861, and was mustered in state service for one year at Camp Davis, a quarter of a mile southwest of College Hill, Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia, by Lieutenant Colonel D A Langhorne, Provisional Army of Virginia, on 30 May, 1861.
