I'm new to this and looking for instruction. For my trees I have resort to the "Whittet Book" in Scotland and then later North America tracking my data online by ancestry.
After the clearings from Scotland and Ireland and wholesale immigration to Detroit, and then crossing the St Croix to found Sarnia in Lambton Ontario my family migrates around the Great Lakes and major rivers before the comings of the railroads and steam.
I would like to import my data here.
I have a number of trees started for different surnames such as Whittet = Quhittet, = Wheetet, = Whitehead = white; where names have different spellings in documents both in terms of different villages and times, but seem to be reinforced elsewhere as where a kirk is reporting on the progress of a punishment and Quhittet seems interchangable with Whittet.
If you have your trees on another site, you can download them as a GEDCOM, then upload it onto here. A GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting suggested matches then add any remaining names manually.
I understand the different spellings of names, it depends on the handwriting and what that name looks like to the transcriber, it can be quite difficult at times. With the alternate spellings that can be noted in the biography section of each persons profile.
Certain Irish ancestors can be a nightmare to find any record of them, in 14 years I have found next to nothing on my Irish side.
Have you had a look at www.familysearch.org? They are a free site, you will need to register with them and they have a large catalogue of records from many different countries, and each of their records has a copy and paste citation that you can add to your profiles as a source.
I hope this helps, any problems please let me know
