Frederick Stephen Whittington was born on 30th October 1900 in no. 2 Jubilee Cottages, Broadwater, Sussex. He was the son of Corporal George Thomas Whittington, 1st Royal Sussex Regiment, and Jane McCutcheon.[1][2][3]
Frederick's father was posted to South Africa to fight in the (first) Boer War. After his father was granted permission by the Army to reside in South Africa,[4] the family in England fell on distressing times. One by one, Frederick's mother gave the children into care, and at various dates, they emigrated to Boston in the United States:—three of them by way of Dr Barnardo's programme for migrating [British "home children"] to Canada.
In spring of 1911, Frederick and his younger brother, Bernard, were boarders in the household of Percy and Florence Ives in Long Melford, Suffolk.[5]
On 29th June 1911, Frederick and his brother, Bernard, set sail aboard the ship, Sicilian, arriving at Québec on 11th July. They were two of a large party of children from Dr. Barnardo’s Home.[6][7]See "Dr Barnardo's Home Children" in Research Notes section, below.
After a period of time spent in Dunnville [then RR3, Brampton], Ontario (probably performing farm labour), Frederick emigrated by rail from Toronto to Buffalo, New York on 10th July 1919.[8][9]
Frederick and Bernard settled in with their maternal aunt, Eleanor Quinn, in Arlington, Massachusetts.[10]
In 1929, Frederick married Catherine "Kitty" Helen Hastings (1900–1989) in Arlington.[11]
In June 1930, Fred travelled to Dunville, Ontario, stating his intention on the Canadian immigration form to take up farming there.[12] The venture seems to have been short-lived, as Fred’s and Catherine’s household was in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1935.[13]
Frederick's first child, Esther Helen, died in Arlington on 2nd February 1933, aged about two-and-a-half years.[14]
On 15th February 1942, when the family lived at 19 Webster Avenue in Cambridge, Fred registered for the U.S. WWII draft.[15] He returned from war service with the 529th Transport Company in the European theatre on 27th November 1945.[16]
Frederick Stephen Whittington, sen., died in Cambridge, Massachusetts on 13th October 1992. He was in his ninety-second year.[17][18]
