Hi Thomas,

Your England Leaders are completing the six monthly check in with all team members. I wanted to thank you for your work on English Profiles. We hope you are going to start working on the Orphan Trail soon.

These are unprecedented and difficult times, and we understand as Project Leaders that your situation may have changed somewhat in the last few months. What we are all able to/ wish to contribute on Wikitree has changed. Please let me know if you are happy with your current role and team choice or if you wish to do something additional or different. Thank you again on behalf of all the project leaders for everything you do.

Joan

Hi, Joan. Thanks for checking up on me. I am interested in the history of those with the surname Wickenden, and my goal is to provide evidence that all Wickendens descended from a family of Wicken who established a den in Cowden, Kent in the 7th century. I have a website (www.thomas-r-wickenden-families.com) and a Wickenden WikiTree with hundreds of names. I have added several GEDCOMs and entered names from various indexes like the IGI. Several Wickendens have lines going back to the 1700s, but it is hard to push them back much further.

Should I focus on my own line and work on individuals, going back as far as I can and learn to use sources for this information? Or should I add more names from other GEDCOMs, or is there another approach, such as focusing on towns such as Cowden, or time periods such as 1650- 1700? Should I stop work and focus on the orphan I was given to learn technique instead? What is your advice? Thanks. Tom

Hi Tom,

Thank you for getting back to me. The work you are doing sounds really interesting and its difficult to know where you would be best starting. I think that if a job is worth doing, its worth doing well. In my opinion, you should first do the orphan trail, learn all you can about what sources are available and how to document them correctly so that others can see and understand where the information came from. Giving others a proper understanding will encourage to them to help you with your research. Once you get the sourcing right, I think you should start work on your own family, make their profiles as good as you can, and take your family line as far back as you can. After you have accomplished that, you can then start to look at where to go next. If you decide to do the orphan trail, which is a requirement if you want to remain in the England Project, I am happy to be your trailblazer, but the trail must be your priority if I do that. You will need to get down to it and work hard, but I am willing to help you. Let me know what you decide to do, and whatever you decide, good luck. Regards Joan

Hi Tom on Adam Crysler. I would like you add information to that profile. If you have already created on from your Gedcom. Let me know the number. I can merge the two profiles and combine the new information. You can also feel free to add information directly to my profile of him. I will add you as a trusted member. Thanks for the collaboration.

Thanks Thomas for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz. As Pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within a project is essential

Please ensure location are entered on allprofiles and data matches dates of profile. Avoid abbreviations, add sources with citations & links for sources to support the data. From wiki ID go to Research to find sources

The United States  Project would be of interest. Adding the tag UNITED_STATES will connect you

Explore Pre-1700 Projects list to find one that fits your research focus.

PS To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research, scroll down near the bottom of that list, and select Research with RootsSearch (use your WikiTree email & password). There are over 20 websites to access from there. You can read more about the tool in the RootsSearch FAQ.
