Biography

Samuel was born in 1809 in Ticehurst, Sussex, England, to Humphrey Wickham (abt.1770-1850) and Mary Rogers (abt.1779-). He was baptised on 18 June 1809 in Ticehurst. [1]

By the 1841 census Samuel was living with his wife Elizabeth (French) Wickham (1811-1897) and six children in Crown Gardens, Brighton, Sussex, England. [2]

By 1851 the family had moved to 14 Vine Street in Brighton. Samuel was working as an engine driver. [3]

In the 1861 census the family had moved again, to 53 Albion Street, Brighton. Samuel was working as an agricultural labourer. [4]

By the 1871 census all the children had left home and the couple were living in 4 Richmond Hill, Brighton. Samuel was still working as a labourer. [5]

By 1881 the couple had moved up the street to 8 Richmond Hill and Samuel was back working as an engine driver (locomotive) even though he was 72 years old. [6]

Samuel died in 1883 in Brighton. He was 74 years old. [7]
