BANDSMAN WIDDOWSON, LONG EATON. Converted four years ago, Bandsman Harry Widdowson boldly took his stand for God and The Army. He was a stranger to Long Eaton at the time and shortly afterwards married Sister Lizzie Smith. Taken ill, our comrade realised that his end was near, and showed calm confidence in God. Adjutant Lawson sat up with him the night before he died, and received his last affectionate and inspiring message for his comrades in the Corps and the Band. He did his best to comfort his weeping wife, charged her to meet him in heaven, and pleaded with his brother to decide for Christ till God gave him the realisation of his dying wish. His last words were "Fight on!"
Grandfather Harry was left with some of the responsibility of caring for his brothers. I am almost sure the reason was that Great Grandfather Edward lost his wife Jane, when she was still in her early thirties, possibly shortly after Abbot Edward was bom.
