Biography

Stephen Wiggins was born in Sampson County, North Carolina on 10 Feb 1778. He was the son of William Wiggins and Elizabeth Cooper. On 14 Feb 1803, in Cumberland Co., North Carolina he married Nancy Ann Thames. Their bondsman was David Thames.[1][2][3]

Stephen and Nancy had the following children:

  1. Jonathan Wiggins (1804-1815)
  2. William Wilson Wiggins (1805-1859);[4] m. Elizabeth Henry Fountain, daughter of Henry Fountain and Lucretia Booth.
  3. Thomas Wiggins (1807-1862); m. Elizabeth Allen Ranaldson, daughter of Drury Allen Randaldson and Mary Singletary.
  4. James Wiggins (1809-1869); m. 1) 21 Aug 1834, 1st cousin, Maria Thames,[5] daughter of Rev. Cornelius Thames (brother of Nancy) and Susannah Carver; m. 2) 7 Sep 1837, Abigail (Creighton) Thames, widow of Maria's brother Jonathan Thames.[6]
  5. David Wiggins (1811-1812)
  6. Elizabeth Wiggins (1813-1880); m. Lewis Millender.
  7. Robert L. Davis Wiggins (1816-1880); m. Martha Louisa Fountain, daughter of Green K. Fountain and Nancy Lewis.

Stephen served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 3rd Division, 6th Brigade, 20th Alabama Regiment Militia. He was commissioned on 4 July, 1826 and served until 29 April, 1832.[9]
