Biography

The daughter of John Wiggins and his first wife, Mary (Skinner) Wiggins, Carrie Wiggins was born in Warsaw Township, New York in 1883.^[1] Her mother passed away in 1897 and her father remarried, marrying Adell (Bigford) Wiggins, who raised John Wiggins' five children. In 1900, Carrie Wiggins lived with her family in Warsaw Township.^[2] She graduated from William Smith College, with a degree in teaching,^[3] In 1910, residing at home,^[4] she taught in the Warsaw public school system.^[3]

Her father passed away in 1914 and Carrie Wiggins moved to Woodbury, New Jersey, where her brother, Elmer, and his family also resided at the time. In 1920, Carrie boarded with widow Annie Clayton and her adult daughter, teaching school in the Woodbury public school system.^[5] In 1926, Carrie traveled to Europe, returning aboard the S.S. Leviathan out of Cherbourg, France, departing on August 31, 1926 and arriving into the Port of New York on September 6, 1926.^[6]

In 1930, residing in Woodbury, Carrie lodged with Florence B. Barber, also a public school teacher.^[7] In 1940, she shared lodgings at 131 E. Center Street in Woodbury with her partner, May Fitzgerald.^[8]

Carrie Wiggins passed away suddenly while vacationing with her sister, Mabel Cochrane, in Chautauqua County, New York, at the age of 78.^[9] She is buried with her family at Warsaw Cemetery in Warsaw, New York.^[10]
