Jeremiah Wilcox, born in 1674, in or near Kingston, Rhode Island, was the sixth child of Hannah Hazard & Stephen Wilcox.
Samuel Wilcox, a son of Daniel Wilcox (1632-1702), had a son Jeremiah born in 1683 at Dartmouth, Mass. Austin (on page 423 of his Genealogical Dictionary) also credited Samuel with two other children, William b. 1685 and Jerwin b. Feb. 14, 1688. However, the Vital Records of Dartmouth, Mass. indicate the child born Feb. 14, 1688 was named Mary. Samuel predeceased his father who died in 1702; the date of son Samuel’s demise has not been found. Samuel’s widow Mary (Wood) m. (2) Thomas Mallett Mallett-1007. Thomas made his will in 1704; it was proved in 1705. His will mentioned "son-in-law" Jeremiah Wilcox and "daughter-in-law" Mary Wilcox. The most reasonable inference is that these were his wife’s children by Samuel Wilcox, i.e., his step-children, not in-laws. Austin instead concluded that said Mary Wilcox was the wife of the Jeremiah Wilcox born ca. 1674 to Stephen Wilcox and that Mary was the daughter of Thomas Mallett and his wife Mary the widow of Samuel Wilcox. Because Samuel Wilcox fathered a daughter born in 1688, Austin’s conclusion was unreasonable. The claim that Jeremiah Wilcox son of Stephen married Mary Mallett, the daughter of Thomas and Mary, is untenable; there is no evidence that they had any children at all, and Thomas's will implies Thomas had no children.
