Sources

United States Federal Census Records

  • 1850 - "Zilpha Mead," Age 69, b. N.Y., residing Redford, Wayne, Michigan, USA, (enumerated Page 10 of 41, Line 35) in the dwelling of Jacob R. Sutton, Age 35, Shoemaker, b. N.Y.. While the 1850 US Federal Census does not provide relationships, this is essentially the dwelling of her daughter Judith (Mead) Sutton, Age 34, b. N.Y., and family as later documented through US Census and other records.

Portrait and Biographical Album of Clinton and Shiawassee Counties, Mich., Chicago, Chapman Bros., 1891. [1]

  • Biography of son, Israel Mead, Page 824, "... a well known and prosperous resident in Duplain Township, Clinton County, was born in Chester, near Lake George in New York, March 30, 1811. His father, Nehemiah Mead was a farmer by occupation and brought his son up in his own line of work. The mother Zilpha Wilcox Mead, gave to her son the inheritance of a sound constitution and an honest love for work but could not give him good educational advantages as the family was so situated as to debar him from such opportunities."

Date and Place of Death

  • Unknown. The enumeration in the 1850 US Federal Census record (above) suggests the Sutton family may have moved to Michigan between 1838 (Lucy Ann Sutton, dau. Jacob & Judah (Mead) Sutton b. Abt. 1838 in New York) and 1843 (Josiah R. Sutton, son Jacob & Judah (Mead) Sutton b. Abt. 1843 in Michigan). This is a temporary notation for ongoing research, and it is not known whether Zilpha (Wilcox) Mead moved with this family or at some other time.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Zilpha by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Zilpha:
