He attended the Missouri Synod Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Springfield, Illinois and was ordained in 1890.

During his school breaks, he went to Cincinnati, Ohio to work in his brother, Henry's machine shop. During one break, he met his future wife Rosina Otterstein and they were married in 1891.

Ernst's first "calling" was to St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Archibold, Fulton County, Ohio.

Shortly after they arrived, Ernst was struck with a serious illness that affected his eyes and throat. His older brother August who had left Texas and brought his family to Ohio, helped Ernst take care of his pastoral duties.

As Ernst's health gradually improved, tragedy struck Rosina. She lost her first 2 children shortly after they were born.

Ernst never fully recovered from his illness and had to retire from the ministry.

The family moved to Denham, Pulaski County, Indiana in 1895 and Ernst obtained work as a shoemaker's assistant in Denham, and continued in that trade until the family moved to Mishawaka, Indiana in 1899 where he worked as a meat inspector in a ham industry.

Rosina's brother William Otterstein and his family lived next door to them in Mishawaka. Ernst and Rosina moved to Flint, Michigan in 1917 where they both died in 1921 and 1926 respectively.
