Biography

Nancy Wilder was born about 1795 in Virginia. Nancy was the daughter of Jonathan Wilder and Mary Overstreet.

Nancy Wilder married Jesse Baker about 1820 in South Carolina.

Nancy does not appear in the appropriate age brackets in Jesse's household in the 1840 Federal Census of Sumter County, South Carolina. It is possible that Nancy died in childbirth or shortly after the birth of her last child, a son Ralph Wilder Baker, who was born the 23rd of April, 1839.

Nancy's husband Jesse Baker is in the 1840 Federal Census Sumter County, South Carolina, and does not have a female in the household of an age appropriate to be his wife, so it is assumed Nancy was deceased and Jesse was a widower in 1840. The males listed in his house hold were in the following age brackets: 1 Male 15 thru 19 giving year of birth between 1821 and 1825; 1 male 10 thru 14 giving year of birth between 1826 and 1830; 1 male 5 thru 9 giving year of birth between 1831 and 1835 and 3 males under 5 giving them year of birth between 1835 and 1839.

Nancy's brother Ralph Wilder died in 1842, in Sumter County, South Carolina intestate, without having ever married and left as his only heirs his father and siblings. Jonathan Wilder, Ralph Wilder's father, was named as the administrator of his son Ralph's estate on the 11th of October, 1842. The probate records of Ralph Wilder give the names of his living siblings and the names of the children of his deceased sister Nancy Wilder Baker. The heirs are all named in the petition to sell the land of Ralph Wilder and the document reads in part as follows: "South Carolina Sumter District In Ordinary To Josia Wilder & wife, John J. Wilder & wife, Jonathan Wilder, Daniel Brunson and Sarah Brunson his wife and Alpheus, Mary, John J, Sarah E., William T, Ralph W., Jesse H. Baker children of Nancy Baker deceased and Jesse Baker guardian ad Litem Legal heirs and representatives of Ralph Wilder who died intestate . . .to show cause . . .why the real estate of Ralph Wilder . . . should not be divided or sold allotting to the said Josiah Wilder & wife one fifth part thereof and the remainder in equal portions among the said Jonathan Wilder, John J. Wilder & wife, Daniel Brunson & Sarah his wife and the children of Nancy Baker deceased . . . [dated] 27 December 1842 [signed] W. Lewis Ordinary"
