Biography

William was born about 1786 in North Carolina.

He married Sopha Strickland on November 22, 1811 in Wake County, North Carolina. The couple had at least 8 or 9 children together whom they raised between Wake county and Franklin County.[1][2][3]

Supreme Court case between William and his renter John Roe against John Ireland in 1858.[4]

According to Williams will and court cases he was a farmer and land owner that had several parcels of landed rented out to different families. On looking at his census papers and will he appears to have accumulated a decently large amount of wealth in his time. He does also appear to have owned several slaves which I will work on attaching over time.

William passed away in February of 1867 and was laid to rest in the Wilder family cemetery in Louisburg, North Carolina.[5]

Heirs listed on will probate:

Calvin Wilder, Sally May, Bryant Wilder, Samuel T Wilder, William Wilder, Emily Ann Wheless, B F Wilder, John W Chamblee (grandchild), A J Underhilll and wife Eliza(grandchild), Z J Terrel and wife Florance(grandchild), Dock Wilder(grandchild), Michael H Wilder(grandchild),Joe Wilder(grandchild), Applewhite Wilder(grandchild).

Research Notes

It appears that at least 2 of his children preceded William in death and he thus listed their children in his will in their parents place. These two children are attached to him almost exclusively because of their children being listed multiple times in Williams will.

Interesting note, the Wilder family apparently mixed a few different times with the Chamberlee family as at least 2 of William and Sophias children married Chamberlee children. There was also more contact with the Strickland family as Sophia was a Strickland and some of their children went on to marry Stricklands. Common for the time I know, I just still find it interesting and entertaining to see all the connections.
