Biography

Edna, daughter of Harvey "Henry" Jacob Wilder and Cora Bell Benedict,[1] was born 6 December 1896 in Weare, Oceana County, Michigan.[1][2][3][4] She grew up there in a large farm family headed by her parents Harvey J. (age 40, farmer) and Cora B. Wilder (33) and her maternal grandmother Lida Benedict (74).[2] In 1900 their children living at home included Edna G. (4), John W. (20, farmhand), Emer L. (13), Emory R. On 9 August 1914 in Weare Township, she married Samuel Edward Hepworth,[6] son of William Bramwell Hepworth and Ann Eliza Emery.[7] They had eleven children four of whom may still be living:

By 1920 Samuel (age 26, farmer) and Edna (23) had moved to Hammond, Lake County, Indiana, with their children Samuel "Eugene" (4), Daniel Ralph (2) and David Jesse (one month).[29] The family remained in Indiana—in Washington Township, Morgan County—in 1930.[30] The growing household encompassed Samuel (age 37), Edna (34), and their children Samuel "Eugene" (14, b. Michigan), Daniel Ralph (12, b. Michigan), David Jesse (10, b. Indiana), Nola Grace (8, b. Michigan), Mary Omega (7, b. Michigan), Hazel Selina (5, b. Wisconsin), Daisy Hepworth (3, b. Michigan), a two-year-old son and a one-month-old daughter.[30]

In 1940 the household in Pentwater, Pentwater Township, Oceana County, Michigan, included Samuel (age 47, laborer), Edna (43), Nola (18), Mary (17, laborer), Hazel (15), Daisy (13), an 11-year-old son and daughters aged 10, six and five.[31]
