Biography

The son of Henry Wilder and [[]], John was born in Jewell County, Kansas in 1880.[1] Shortly after his brother's birth in 1882, the family continued west to Nebraska, where his mother died in 1883. John's father then returned to Michigan, where he remarried, marrying Cora (Benedict) Wilder in 1886. They settled in Weare, in Oceana County, to farm.[2] John married Ella Mosher in Grand Rapids on November 16, 1914.[3] John and Ella lived in Grand Rapids, but moved to Chicago, which is where they lived when he registered for the draft in 1942.[4] He listed his occupation as shear grinding. He listed his wife as his next of kin but listed his marital status as single on the 1940 census, where he roomed in a boarding house on Van Buren Street, while working as a scissors sharpener.[5]
