Biography

Martha A. Wiley was born about 1835 in Maine, daughter of Porter and Mary A. Wiley.

In 1850, a 15-year-old Martha Wiley lived in Bangor, Maine with her parents 45-year-old Porter and 36-year-old Mary A. Wiley. Added to the information below, this appears to be the same Martha Wileyl

She married Charles F. Bridgham on January 1, 1854 in Penobscot Co., Maine. He was born in Maine, probably Charleston, about 1832.

In 1860, Charles and his family were living with his parents in Charleston. He was a farm laborer. His family included his wife Martha, and daughters Flora and Mary.

Charles F. Bridgham died on October 12, 1865, at the young age of 33, leaving three small children behind. He is buried at the Charleston Village Cemetery in Charleston.

In 1870, Charles’ and Martha’s children, Flora, Mary, and Viola, were living in the household of their grandparents, Ellsworth and Joan, in Charleston. The three children attended school. But Martha Willey lived in Bangor with her parents Porter and Mary Willey and without her own children. Why did she use her maiden name?

In 1875, a 40-year-old Martha M. [sic] Paine, born in Maine, lived in Winona, Minnesota with 35-year-old C. B. Paine, born in Maine.

Martha A. (Wiley) Bridgham died on June 7, 1882, and is buried at Charleston Village Cemetery in Charleston where her husband is buried.

Research Notes

On Feb. 5, 1873, Martha A. (Wiley) Bridgham married Chs.(?) F. Paine in Westborough, MA. She was the daughter of Porter(?) and May Ann Wiley (US Marriages Image, www.findmypast).

There is a Birth Record for Martha Willey, b. Jan. 11, 1834 in Portland, daughter of Samuel and Olive Willey. This appears to be a different person.
