Obituary

The Fredonia Daily Herald Fredonia, Kansas Tuesday, May 21, 1918 page 1

Old Settler Gone.

Obituary of Mrs. George A. Parsons of Duck Creek Township.

May 17, 1918, at the home in Duck Creek township, 2 1/2 miles northeast of Buxton, where she and her husband located many years ago, occurred the death of Mrs. George A. Parsons, aged 75 years. The funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Rev. J.H. Blackburn of New Albany, after which interment was made in the Fredonia cemetery.

Minerva M. Willey was born April 23, 1843, at New Albany, Indiana. She came to Kansas in 1860 and settled in Bourbon county in which county she was living when Humboldt was sacked, and burned during the civil war. She was one of the teachers of Bourbon county in 1866.

On January 6, 1867, she was united in marriage to George A. Parsons at Iola, Kansas and to their union was born one son, John, who has always lived close to his parents and taken care of them in their declining years. The fond mother was never weary of telling of John's loyalty and faithfulness in caring for her every need.

Mrs. Parsons was one of the first students of Baker University. She was a faithful member of the Methodist church until coming to Wilson county in 1879, where she joined the Presbyterian church. She was converted at the early age of 13 years and developed a very sweet Christian life. She acquired a great love for reading and had read the Bible thru four times. She knew a great portion of it by heart which strengthened her faith as she came near the close of life.

She was a good letter writer and many are the hearts she has helped and gladdened through writing. It is said she never had a enemy, and never spoke evil of anyone. If she could not speak good of a person she had a habit of saying nothing. She was a great peacemaker, a mother and friend to all. She holds a place in the memory of her many friends and loved ones that will not soon grow dim and which shall be enriched because her life was good.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one son, John W. Parsons and family and Mrs. Minerva Russell of Bronson, Kans., and many friends. - J.H. Blackburn, Pastor.
