Note H2
HARMON WILKERSON and family
Hammon (or Harmon is a spelling in later records)
Hammon Wilkerson found in 1790 - 1870 Georgia Census Index on Internet by Douglas Wilkerson records Hammon in Warren Co., GA on page 165 in 1794 Tax List, in township "Friends District".
On Internet, Hammon is in Wilkes Co., NC in Medlocks District' Tax list in 1793. In Lynn Wilkerson's research he records Harmon and family were in Warren Co., GA on April 13, 1798. His support for this date: Harmon served on the Grand Jury in 1800 in Warren Co. Then in 1801 to 1805 they were found in Montgomery Co., GA. on land lottery records. Harmon, Duncan, James and John registered for land.
In 1807 Harmon and family were in Putnam Co., GA.
If our great grandfather John Wilkerson was born in 1798 in Warren Co., GA. he was nine years old when the clan arrived and settled in Putnam Co. GA.
In 1813 Harmon's son William paid taxes in Capt. McMurray's District in Putnam Co. Harmon, Abel, Sarah and Jeptha paid taxes that year in Putnam Co. To give a perception of time passage, William was 36 and married, Abel was 38 and married, Jeptha was 16 - boys began paying taxes at age 16. The age difference supports that Harmon had two families from two marriages. Older boys' mother was Margaret White (possibly), and Jeptha's mother was Olive, along with several other children listed on the family sheet.
In 1820 Census of Jasper Co. GA (Microcopy 33, Roll 6)
Harmon had moved to Jasper co., Ga. He died in Jasper Co., in 1825. Support: I have his will. However, living in Putnam Co in 1820 Census were John, William, Duncan, Lemuel.
Abel, one of the older sons of Harmon, was living in Jasper Co., at age of 45. He had 8 boys ages as follows: 5 - under 10, 3 older boys. Wife was 45 and 3 daughters were listed. Abel had no slaves.
Harmon had 11 sons according to Lynn's genealogy: they were: John, Elijah, William, Abel, Reuben, (born in NC & by his first wife. Also he and Olive's children were: Eldred, Zarah, Jeptha, Caleb, Lemuel, Simeon. Also the name James and Duncan appear to be sons, but they are supported by other recordings.
A descendant, H. Lloyd Wilkerson, retired Major General, US Marine Corps, is a researcher through William, Harmon's son. William first appears as an adult on the tax list of 1813 in Capt. McMurray's District, along with Harmon, Abel, Sarah and Jeptha. William can be found in 1820 Cenus of Putnam Co. GA. In this census William and wife reported their birth between 1794-1804.
In 1820 Census, Putnam Co., GA
INFORMATION of ABEL (ABLE) WILKERSON, son of Harmon and mother was probably Margaret White. He was born 1775, according to 1820 Census' age and
probably in North Carolina. He died just before 1850 in Troup Co., GA. But there is some evidence he migrated to Tallapoosa Co., AL before his death. Abel was found on 1805 tax list in Warren Co., GA (so he was over 16 yrs. old when brother John H. had a son born in Warren Co. (I believe). In 1815 Abel is found on Putnam Co. GA tax Disgest along with Archibald M., Daniel, Duncan, Hammond (Harmon), Jeptha, William and Zarah. (from birth dates Abel would be 30, Jeptha would be 16, William was 42, and Zarah was 25. (Archibald, Daniel, and Duncan were probably sons of William, Zarah, or possibly of Harmon. - my deduction). In 1818 Abel is in Jasper Co. with Hammon, Thomas, Zeptha and Rueben & others not named. In 1824 land records' Abel is the only Wilkerson listed in Troup Co., GA. He owned lot #211 of the 5th Land district. Probably soon after his father's death he moved to Troup Co., soon Archibald and Harrison S. arrived. By 1830 Census added were Aaron Wilkes, Henry L. Wilkerson, Edward Wilkerson. No records have been found to prove Abel's family and his wife remains unknown. Census records are the only supportive evidence I have. Several researchers have puzzled his family together by name association on U.S. censuses and marriage records as follows:
U.S Census and marriage records of Abel Wilkerson:
1820 Census Abel is listed in Irwin (Jasper) County, GA
1830 and 1840 censuses Abel is in Troup Co., GA
John H. Wilkerson was Harmon's first child by his first wife, born in NC about 1772. From Internet -- e-mail posted by Debbie Cummings - William Wilkerson was her 4th removed Grandfather, says Hammon was born in Monroe Co. NC. in 1753.
