Biography

William was born in Ashby de la Zouch on 8 December 1861^[1] and registered the following year.^[2] He was the son of Henry Wilkins and Eliza Findley and was baptised on 1 January 1862 at Holy Trinity Church in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire.^[3]

In 1871 William is a 9 year old scholar living in the village of Overseal with his parents and 3 younger siblings.^[4]

William's occupation in 1881 isn't clear; his father is the village Postmaster and Farmer. The older children no longer in school are working as a postmistress and letter carrier. William has "F son" faintly written and then crossed through, from this I have assumed he is working on his fathers farm.^[5]

On 22 March 1887, William married Elizabeth Jones at Overseal Church^[6][7][8] William was working as a farmer and his father Henry was working as a coachman at that time and Elizabeth's father Edward Jones was deceased.

By the 1891 census, William and Elizabeth had moved to Anglesey Basin, Hammerwich, Staffordshire where they farmed with two servants. The couple had two sons, both recorded on the cesus as Henry, although the younger is actually Percy.^[9]

Ten years later things are very different for the family, now with 5 children they are living in Fenton, Stoke on Trent where William has left his farming days and is the Asst Supt of an insuracne company. The places of birth of the children suggest that they remained in Hammerwich for a while after 1891, spent some time in Whittington and Burton before moving to Fenton within a year of the census being taken.^[10] Unfortunately, Percy from the 1891 census is not listed with the family and a younger son is named Percy C strongly suggesting that the older brother has passed away. By 1911 the famiy had grown, and moved again. Now they are in Blackpool Street, Burton on Trent.^[11] The census shows that William and Elizabeth had 8 children, only 5 of whom were still living. William is the Assistant Superintendant of the Prudential Insurance Comany. The family has a visitor - Annie Davenport. I have yet to find out what her realtionship is to the family. (she is around the same age & has the same place of birth as Elizabeth - sisier, friend? William died at home in Stapenhill on 17 October 1931 aged 69,^[12][13][14] and is buried in Stapenhill Cemetery.^[15]
