Carrie (Wilkins) Pollard was born in Pennsylvania.
Carrie age 21, joined the U.S. Christian Commission and was sent to assist in the new special diet kitchen in Chattanooga, then cared for wounded outside Atlanta, and on the hospital ship "Nashville" until the end of the Civil War.
Carrie (Wilkins) Pollard was interred in California.
Carrie was born 8 May 1842 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The family moved to Keokuk, Iowa in 1852.
When the Civil War broke out, Carrie served the Union. She was the only member of her family to serve.
Quality food and nutrition was not available to military hospitals early in the Civil War, but was critical to fight off disease and recover from wounds. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, agents of the U.S. Christian Commission stepped in and drove the creation of a special diet kitchen at their 1200-bed hospital. On 22 Apr 1864, Carrie, now active in the Commission, was one of three volunteers sent to work in the newly established kitchen.
Chattanooga, Tennessee, 1864
While in Chattanooga, General William T. Sherman began a campaign in Georgia, leaving many wounded and ill soldiers along the way. Carrie was sent to a field hospital in Marietta, and remained there until the Union soldiers took over Atlanta in November 1864. After a month-long furlough, she was ordered to report to the floating hospital "Nashville" at New Albany, Indiana on the Ohio River. She remained on the "Nashville" until it ceased operations in August 1865.
Hospital Ship "Nashville"
At the end of the war, she returned to her family in Iowa. Sometime before her marriage in 1873, she followed a brother to California.
Her husband William died 19 Nov 1876. Carrie remained in California, first as the head of household, then living with her daughter Maud and her family.
