Biography

In 1861 he is named in the Canada West, Simcoe census living with his wife Jane aged ?, William 20, Arthur 19, Margaret 17, Eliza 15, John 13, James 11, Hugh 9, Alexander 7, and Catherine 5. He is recorded as age 50 which would place his birthdate around 1811.

A marriage date of Sept 3 1839 in Simcoe was obtained from the Anglican Archives in Toronto. That date would coincide with the birth of his eldest son William in 1841. John and Jane were married in Sept 1839 by the Rev. Featherstone Osler, later a Canon in the Anglican Church and the father of Sir William Osler according to reported diocese records.

John is named on his son's William's marriage certificate with John's wife Jane Speers also named, Feb 6, 1865, in Essa township, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada.

In 1871 he is named in the Simcoe South Canadian census living with his wife Jane aged 57, Arthur 29, John 24, James 22, Hugh 19, Alexander 17 and Catherine 13. He is noted 60 years of age which would place his birthdate around 1811.

He is buried in St Peter's Anglican Cemetery, 3rd Line and 5 Sideroad, West Essa, Essa township, Simcoe, Ontario. The inscription reads "John Wilkinson, Died Feb 7, 1878, aged 69 years. A native of Co. Armagh Ireland. This would place his birthdate in late 1808 to early 1809.
