Biography

Rebecca Wilkinson was born in about 1855, at place unknown, the daughter of George and Sarah M Wilkinson^[1].

It isn't clear when Rebecca arrived in New Zealand, but there are two possibilities.

1. The first possibility is that she arrived in Caterbury from Westmeath, Ireland aboard the "Hydaspes" on 9 November 1878, possibly with three younger siblings as there are four Wilkinson's grouped together. Rebecca (22), nurse, Sarah (19). General Servant, Caroline (14) and Edward (17), Farm Labourer. A Note next to their entry says: Left Caroline McLelland Mrs Vicars will take them ^[2]

2. The second possibility is that she arrived in Caterbury from Donegal, Ireland aboard the "Opawa" on 25 October 1880^[3], as a Rebecca (24) and a Cathe (17) Wilkinson, both single and General Servants, arrived on that ship.

Rebecca married Frederick James Hathaway on 21 October 1885 in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand^[4].

Rebecca and Frederick moved to Australia soon after their marriage as their first child was born on on 17 July 1887 in Balmain, New South Wales, Australia. Their children were Grace Kathleen (Hathaway) Holcombe, Frederick Gilbert Vernon Hathaway, Gladys Caroline (Hathaway) Cattley, Lytton Hathaway and Laura Beatrice (Hathaway) Green

Her husband drowned in the surf at North Steyne, one of the Northern Beaches of Sydney, not far from his home in Manly, on 11 April 1915.

Rebecca died, seven years later, on 7 Jul 1922 at Manly, New South wales, Australia^[5].
