Biography

A Francis Wilkinson was baptized July 7, 1763 in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, England[1] but was probably the same one who was buried July 14, 1763. The parents in both cases were John Wilkinson and Ann.[2]

There was a Francis Wilkinson, son of Francis Wilkinson, baptized October 31, 1762[3] but this would break the connection with his presumed brother John. Francis is believed to be the brother of John because they both came from Stockton-on-Tees and both settled in Duaneburg, New York (John came a few years later), and are listed next to each other in the 1810 census,[4] both joined the Episcopal church there, and because they both used the same set of names in naming their children.

There was a Francis Wilkinson, son of John Wilkinson and Ann, baptized August 20, 1771 at Easington, Durham England.[5] There was a Francis Wilkinson, son of John Wilkinson, baptized at Darlington, Durham, England in February 26, 1767.[6]

Francis married Jane Bell on December 26, 1798 at Stockton-on-Tees Parish, by license.[7] [8][9][10] [11] They had seven or more children, the first--George--born in England, the second--Jane--probably at sea, and the rest in New York.[12] There is a tradition in the family of the fourth child, Thomas, that he was born at sea, but this does not fit the baptism records in New York. The 1820 and 1830 census suggest another unidentified daughter besides Elizabeth, too young to be Jane or Sarah Ann.

The 1810 census shows Francis Wilkinson in Duanesburg, Schenectady, New York with: Males under 10 years: 3 [John Bell W., Thomas W., William Brown W.]; males 10-15 years: 1 [George W.]; males 26-44 years: 1; males 45 and older: 1; [either of the last two might be Francis, but who was the other?]; females 26- 44: 1.[13] Francis and John Wilkinson also appear next to each other in the 1810 census for Albany, and it might well be the same individuals. Males under 10 years: 3 [John Bell W., Thomas W., William Brown W.]; males 10-15 years: 1 [George W.]; males 26-44 years: 1[Francis ]; females 16-25: 1 [Jane or Sarah Ann]; females 26- 44: 1[Jane].[14]

In 1820 there were three males aged 10-15; 1 age 16-25; and one male 45 or older; two females under 10 [Elizabeth and one other]; and one female 45 or older [Jane].[15]

In 1830 the Duanesburg census had Francis W. Wilkinson. Males aged 15-19: 2; males 50-59: 1 [Frances]; females 10-14: 2 [Elizabeth and one other]; females 40-49: 1 [Jane].[16]

The Albany Argus ran a notice April 25 (apparently 1823) of insolvents, listing Francis Wilkinson, of Duanesburg, June 7. (The date is not on the image of the paper, but it contains a news report on the Duke of Angoulême about the enter Spain, and reports on Lord Strangeford's diplomatic activities in Turkey.) It could, however, refer to his nephew Francis, who in 1824 made some land arrangement and moved to Herkimer county.

He died in March 1835 at Duanesburg, Schenectady, New York, USA[17] His widow is recorded in church records as residing at Burton Bridge. If the couple had lived there previously, that puts their residence on Bramans Corners Rd, highway 102, next to Schoharie Creek on the border between Schenectady and Montgomery counties.

Y DNA Type

The Y-DNA type is R-Y5061, in a group known as Breassal Braec[18], with origins in Leinster, Ireland. How did it get to Stockton-on-Tees? A hypothesis is that it spread to Tipperary, and from there joined the medieval invasion of Scotland, joining what became the Wilkinson border clan, and then some of these Wilkinsons migrated south into Durham.

Francis Wilkinson and Jane Bell had six children- George (17), Thomas (692), William (693), Sarah Ann (694), John Bell (695), Elizabeth (696). A letter from William Wilkinson (1918) a son of Thomas quoted later mentions two other children- Francis and Frank. These may be other names for two of the six but may be additions. I do not know. George (17) was two years old when his parents arrived from England. The baptismal records of St. George's Episcopal church of Schenectady show John Bell (695) born 4-9-1806 and Thomas (692) born 4-26-1808. Then the (Z) record shows Elizabeth (696) bp. 4-9-1817. Francis Wilkinson died 1835. (Z). (X) shows Jane (3925) born to (35) and (36) in 1804. [X is Albany Episcopal, St. Peters, Albany, Z is Christ Episcopal, Duanesburg, Schenectady]
