Biography

Conrad's birth year is estimated as 1767 after his parents had migrated to North Carolina. He died after 1820 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Conrad had the great responsibility of handling his brother Johannes' estate after he died suddenly without a will.[1] I have the Johannes's estate papers- all sizes and shapes, many as small as 5" x 1" and it took me a couple of weeks to sort through them and figure them all out. This is a summary:

July 1, 1793 paid taxes to US on Johannes' distillery six dollars
7 October 1793, Conrad Will and Valentine Dewalt executed an administration bond guaranteeing their faithful and accurate administration of John Wills’s estate. Their securities were Jno. Baldridge and Wm. R. Sadler.
October 30, 1793 paid to Charles Glover for three deer skins 1 pound, 5 shillings
October 30, 1793 paid to himself for appraising 3 pounds, 10 shillings
27 December 1793 vendue [auction] of the estate's personal property.
30 October 1793 paid Rudolph Conrad ten shillings for crying the vandue [he was auctioneer at the estate auction]
January 8, 1794 paid James Boggs for one day's ploughing with his own team 7 pounds, 6 shillings per day
Settlement of John Wills Deceased account with Peter Forney. On June 24 1793, Will's owed for a ballance of Iron on account £1.19.0 and owed Forney for an Indent paid for Wills to the Sheriff £2.3.0. Total amount due £4.2.0. 18 March 1794, Peter Forney presented his claim before Nathanial Alexander, Justice of the Peace
July 19, 1794 paid John's taxes for 1793 11 shillings, 8 pence
As of 20 March 1792, John Wills owed Robert McCombs for the following. John Wills had agreed to settle the balance of note that Conrad Wills owed McCombs; the balance due was £1.10.3. John Wills also owed McCombs for making two collars £0.6.3, for 6 ¼ pounds of steel at 2/6 per pound £0.15.7 ½, and for Staves £0.8.0. The total amount due McCombs was £3.8.7 ½. On 26 July 1794, Robert McCombs presented his claim before Justice of the Peace Peter Forney
October the 29th 1794 received of Conrade Wills, Administrator of the Estate of John Wills deceased. one pound it being in full for my part of a Company Crosscut Saw, formerly the property of John Wills, Adam Cloninger, Thomas Ryne & Conrade Wills. Received by me, Thomas Ryne
October the 29th 1794 received of Conrade Wills, Administrator of the Estate of John Wills deceased. one pound it being in full for my part of a Company Crosscut Saw, formerly the property of John Wills, Adam Cloninger, Thomas Ryne & Conrade Wills. Received by me, Adam Cloninger [The four men owned equal shares in the crosscut saw.]
December 16, 1794 John Wills owed William Rankin £1 for a sythe and cradle which the estate paid
Jacob Hinkle sued the estate for debt. July 18, 1795: "To any lawful officer. You are commanded to take the body of Conrad W ills and Felty Devault, administrators of Jno Wills, Dec'd , and bring them before me or some other justice of said county to answer the complaint of Jacob Henkel in a plea of debt under twenty pounds.
Summon John Flat witness for the plaintiff [also named:] Jacob Sebo [?]"
November 7th 1795. The parties appeared [in court and made] their allegations & the witnesses were heard. Judgment for the sum of £13.5.50 and 18 shillings costs, J. Graham, Justice of the Peace
Execute and put to sale as much of the property of Cunrod Wills as will discharge the above Judgment and cost. Given under my hand this 7 day of [illegible month] 1796.
August the 22 1795 Received of Conrod Wills £1.15.8 the Cost of a Suit Daniel McKisick Brought against the Executors of John Wills Estate for Distillery. Received by me, Wm Rankin, Sheriff
October 22, 1795 paid David Rankin twenty shillings due him from John Wills for an unstated item
Probably January 1797 paid to government for 1796 tax unstated
February 17, 1797 paid to J. Abernathy "for services at the Vandue [the auction] of John Will deceased £2"
Received of Conrod Wells for John Wells Heirs £3.4 their publick and County tax for the year 1797, J. Abernathy [tax collector]
June 30, 1798 paid to government for "public buildings tax" 1 shilling
October 1798 county court session 1798. "Ordered by court that Joseph Neel, Saml Espey, James Wilson, Thomas Wheeler and Wm Scott or any three of them be a committee to Settle the Estate of John Wills deceased and make Return this Session."
October 3, 1798 Administrators Valentine Devault and Conrad Wills report payment of vouchers #1-21 amounting to £8.11.10 1/2
So for five years, Conrad had to deal with the settling of his brother's estate. It was about 1798 that his widowed sister-in-law, Catharine Wills, remarried to Daniel McGee.
