Biography

Frederick was born in 1886 south of Rover, Highland Township, Oregon County, Mo.
He was the son of John Willard and Sarah Colyott.
When Fred was in his 90s he said that he had an uncle named Charles who went away to the Civil War and never came back. (His named was Nathaniel Charles). Two of Nathan's brother's named a son, Charles, for him.

He married Eva Tolliver, Aug 1, 1909. Fred was 23-24 years old; Eva was 22.
They were married 45 years and had 9 children.

(This census seems to say its his 2nd marriage, though it's a little difficult to tell.)

There was another Fred Willard about the same age (son of John Martin Willard, his wife was Lottie Williams). But these newspaper articles are about Charles Fred Willard.

West Plains (MO) Journal —Jan 25, 1917, p2 - Brandsville – There were two deaths in town Sunday night, the 21st. They were the infants of Mr and Mrs Fred Willard and Mr and Mrs Joe Steinigar. Interment of the former one will be at the Oak Lawn cemetery, and the latter at Union Hill. Both were due to whopping cough. [This was Minnie Lurene, b 1916].

Oregon County Times-Leader (Koshkonong, MO) —Oct 6, 1925, p1 - Red Ranch - The John and Fred Willard families of Brandsville moved to the Red Ranch district to pick cotton.

West Plains (MO) Journal-Gazette —Feb 16, 1928, pg. 6 - Red Ranch -- Fred Willard has moved from the Quay farm to the Boak place.
—Dec 27, 1928, p 7 - Red Ranch - Mary Alice Wilard, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Willard, died Thurs, Dec 20. Burial was in the Brandsville cemetery. Rev. C.D. Patrick conducted the funeral.

Howell County Gazette —Jan 17, 1929, p5 - Red Ranch - Mr and Mrs. Charley Wilson returned Sunday after a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs Fred Willard. (probably in Arkansas)

The family was in Paragould, Greene Co, Ark in 1930 & 1940.
Their daughter Edith married Albert Lane in Paragould, Greene Co, Ark in 1940.

In 1942 Fred registered for the World War II draft in Paragould, Arkansas. He registered under the name Charles Willard born December 30, 1886.[3]

—Nov 9, 1944, p4 - Local - Evan Willard of Pottersville Rt has gone to Hoxie, Ark., to visit his brother, Johnny Willard. He was accompanied by Mr and Mrs Squire Willard of Pottersville Rt. They also plan to visit Fred Willard, who lives at Paragould, Ark. Their father was John Willard who used to run a nursery in Oregon County.

In the obituary of his brother Stonewall in 1954, he is listed as Fred Willard, Paragould, Arkansas.[4]

Eva died in 1955 and Fred married Martha Dowdy, June 30, 1956. They were married for 24 years.

Fred lived for some time in Rockford, IL

He passed away in 1981.

Funeral services for Charles Frederick “Fred” Willard, 94, West Plains, will be held at 2pm Sat, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home, Rev. Bill Combs officiating.
Mr. Willard died at 8:30 pm Tues in West Plains Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec 30, 1886, Rover, the son of the late John Elbert and Mary Alice Lumlkinson Willard (sic).
He received his education in the schools at Rover, and on Aug 23, 1909 he was married at Brandsville to Eva Tolliver, who preceded him in death Jan 29, 1955. On June 30, 1956 he married at West Plains to Mattie Holloway. Mr. Willard was of the Undenominational Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie Willard, West Plains; 5 children, Altie Wilson, West Plains; Ruby Smith, Paragould, Ark; Edith Smith and Helen Norris, Ivanhoe, CA; Riley Willard, Fresno, CA; 2 stepchildren, Ray Holloway, Thayer; Keith Holloway, Hartville; 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Sarah Dove Quay, Catoosa, OK; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, 4 daughters, one son, 5 brothers, 5 sisters and 3 grandchildren.
Burial will be in the Brandsville Cemetery under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home, West Plains.
