Samuel Willard was born in Hartford, Connecticut, son of Josiah Willard and Hannah Hosmer.
Samuel married Sarah Clark on June 6, 1683. Children Sarah, Samuel II, Joseph and Mehitable.
Samuel bought five acres of land in Saybrook, Connecticut from David Parker in 1687. He built thereon a house which was still standing in 1716. He was elected town clerk April 10, 1713. He had command of the fort in Saybrook in 1696.
