Biography

WHO ARE LOTTIE'S PARENTS? Nothing is known about the first 13 years of Lottie's life. Everyone who has added parents to Lottie has put Orson Ragotz Willard and Matilda Martha Willard. I can see why people have put the two of them as her parents. Unfortunately there is no possible way she is this couple's daughter.

To date what we find is:

Navy Widows and Orphans Certificate #2744 list Orson Ragotz Willard's death as 28 June 1880. It lists his widow as Matilda M. Willard and his children Orson R., Thomas A., Charles B., Frank E., Alfred A., Annie M.. Annie was born only 3 months old when her father died.

Those who add Lottie to Orson and Matilda use Orson's correct birth date in 1841 and a death date of one of the other Orson R. Willard's in order to make him still alive when Lottie was born (years after his death). Most commonly his grandson's Orson Raymond Willard b.1909, d. 1910 or his son's Orson Ragotz Willard b. 1868, d. 1925 or one of the other Orson Willard's as it was a common family name.

Matilda never remarried.

Lottie is not listed in the family bible.

The first time we find Lottie is in the 1910 census at 13 years old Lottie is listed in the household of Matilda Martha (Shaw) Willard as her daughter. Matilda's husband Orson Ragotz Willard died in 1880 years before the birth of Lottie.

The family had a history of taking in orphans or children who were in unsafe family situations. This was something which continued through the generations and my family growing up also did.

I would love to see descendants of Lottie take DNA tests along with others who descend from Orson and Matilda so we can see if she was a Willard. I took one through

In 1900 Matilda's youngest verified child Annie is grown with a child of her own and living in Norway, Oregon. I am guessing they had to row across the river then get a ride in order to visit. It would make sense for Matilda to take someone in to both assist them and to help Matilda around the farm.

Lottie's death certificate which is filled out by Aurora (Gilman) Willard wife of Frank Elmer Willard (son of Matilda and Orson) who married into the family around the time we first are aware of Lottie. Aurora listed Matilda and Orson as her parents (we know for a fact Orson is not her father). She also put Orson as being born in Illinois (he was born in Michigan). All 6 of Orson and Matilda's children listed in the Navy's Widow's and Orphan's certificate # 2744 have passed away at this point so could not give info.

Lottie died in the Coquille Hospital in Coquille, Coos, Oregon, United States.
