"Fatal Illness Result of Scratched Finger; Member of Prominent Virginia Family and Resident of Norfolk 45 Years
"Judge Thomas Hamlin Willcox, 66 years old, and for 45 years prominent in legal and business circles in Norfolk, died at 2:25 o'clock this morning at his home, 256 West Freemason Street, from streptococcic poisoning, the result of an infected finger.
"His illness was of only a few days' duration and yesterday it was thought that his condition was improving. xxxx last night, however he suffered... which was followed closely by his death.
"Judge Willcox was general counsel for the Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad and a member of the law firm of Willcox, Cooke and ?illcox. As a prominent member and former vestryman of St. Luke's Protestant of the Diocese of Southern Virginia. He also was president of the Norfolk Baseball Corporation and took and active part in other civid and business affairs.
"He was born in Amherst County, October 4, 1859, the son of Thomas Wyatt and Martha Ruffin Claiborne Willcox, members of old and well known Virginia families. In his infancy his parents moved to Charles City County and there it was that he began the study of law in the office of the late Edmund Waddill, after having received an academic education at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College.
"Forty-five years ago last Wednesday, on January 27, 1881, he came to Norfolk and engaged in the practice of law. Later he was elected Commonwealth's attorney, and, after serving four terms in that capacity, was elected in 1894 to the position of judge of the Corporation Court. He resigned this honor, however, in favor of private practice before he took his place on the bench.
"He was married September 17, 1883 to Miss Mary Cary Ambler, of Norfolk, who preceded her husband to the grave having died in March 1907. To his union was born one daughter and five sones, all of who survived their father. They are: Mrs. Mary W. Carter, wife of Lieut. Comdr. W. R. Carter, U.S.N., now in Brazil: former Commonwealth's Attorney Thomas H. Willcox, Jr., Dr. Claiborne Willcox, C. Ambler Willcox, Edward T. Willcox and Charles S Willcox, all of Norfolk. All were at the beside when the end came, with the exception of Mrs. Carter and Charles S. Willcox, who is now in Florida."
