  1. Elected by the "Restored Government of Virginia" as a Unionist to the United States Senate from Virginia to fill the vacancy caused by the expulsion of James M. Mason.
  2. West Virginia did not elect its Senators until two months after statehood. Vacant from statehood January 29, 1861 – April 4, 1861.
